Media had an initial insight of new refurbishments on Thursday in Jeddah, Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium.

The first female football commentator at a major sporting event in the UAE

Amy Gillingham, 29, from Southport, UK, became the first female football commentator at a major sporting event in the UAE. Reporting live on the match between Al Jazira and Shabab Al Ahli in the Super Cup final at Al Ain Sports City.

However, Describing the experience as a ‘dream come true.’ She said meeting the team at a car wash in Ras Al Khaimah was the catalyst for the opportunity.

“Initially, it may sound absurd when I say I got the job through a car wash. But that is precisely what happened,” she told The National. “I was kicking the ball around with some workers and a boy.

The boy’s dad approached me and we talked about football. I have played since I was a kid. So I had lots to say so I know quite a lot about it.”

A man from the Adnoc Pro League Football inquired about Ms. Gillingham’s involvement in the game. “After a few minutes, he asked me if it would be possible for me to commentate,” Ms. Gillingham said. “If someone asked me what my dream job would be. I’d say that comments at a sports game are it.”

Ms. Gillingham, an English teacher at a cluster of public schools in Ras Al Khaimah leads the sports classes. Spent weeks researching information about each player before sitting at the mic in the commentator’s box at Al Ain’s Hazza bin Zayed Stadium.

Doused in nerves and excitement, she arrived with a whiteboard packed with facts about each player.

She said, “I had a co-commentator named Graham Clews who laughed at how prepared I was. He is a big name in local television and sports.

“She told me her co-commentator, Graham Clews, laughed when he saw how well-prepared I had been.
