Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the Crown Prince of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He is popularly known as Fazza, the name under which he publishes his poetry, which means “the one who helps” in Arabic. He is also an equestrian and is a multiple world champion at the World Equestrian Games. Sheikh Hamdan is married to Sheikha Shaikha bint Saeed bin Thani Al Maktoum. On 21 May 2021, Sheikh Hamdan welcomed twins, a son named Rashid and a daughter named Shaikha. He has more than 12 million followers on his Instagram account. He posts pictures that showcase his hobbies, which include animals, poetry, sports, photography, and adventures.

Early life and education

Sheikh Hamdan was born on 14th November 1982. He is the second son of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma’a. He is the second son of their 12 children and the fourth of his father’s children. Sheikh Hamdan descends from the “Al Bu Falasah” clan of the “Bani Yas”.

Hamdan bin Mohammed studied in Dubai at the Rashid School For Boys and later at the Dubai School of Government. He continued his studies in the United Kingdom, where he graduated from Sandhurst in 2001. Later, he attended the London School of Economics. In his interview with he described how Sandhurst taught him the importance of self-discipline, commitment, virtue, responsibility, endurance, understanding, teamwork, friendship, and the benefits of hard work.

Sheikh Hamdan’s roles and positions

In September 2006, Hamdan became the Chairman of the Dubai executive council. On 1 February 2008, he became the Crown Prince of Dubai. While his brother Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed Al Maktoum acceded to deputy ruler of Dubai. As the new hereditary prince, Fazza appointed new key personnel and financial advisors such as John Calverly, a global economist, as well as a hedge fund tycoon, James T Naeem. Fazza himself became head of HN Capital LLP. He is the head of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Establishment for young entrepreneurs. The Sheikh also sits on the Dubai sports council and the Dubai autism centre. He founded the Hamdan International Photography Award in 2011. During the Dubai World Expo 2020, he went to the top floor of the Burj Khalifa to wave the UAE flag.

Horsemanship and poetry

Sheikh Hamdan’s family highly values equestrian sports. Since childhood, riding horses was one of Sheikh Hamdan’s most treasured hobbies. He developed this hobby to clinching the titles of various international and regional endurance riding championships. The Sheikh rides for Godolphin stables. He won a gold medal at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy. He led a team of five UAE riders at the Championships in Samorín on 17 September 2016. Coming to his poetry, Sheikh Hamdan has a number of published poems some of which are now famous songs. The Dubai Crown Prince has gained a fine reputation for composing Nabati poetry under the pen name ‘Fazza’. In the Emirati dialect, ‘Fazza’ means a person who speeds to the help and support of others. He is famous for his romantic and patriotic poems in Arabic.

He describes poetry as: “My identity and poetic character through which I humbly attempt to rekindle the joy in the hearts of people, alleviate their suffering in my own simple way. I express their hopes and aspirations.”
