Police station turned into heritage eatery in Saudi

A young Saudi “jack of all trades” has transformed a disused police station in Abha into a traditional restaurant. In addition using his artistic talent and passion of cooking.

The Al-Hosn Al-Turathi — or Abha castle historical restaurant — of Ibrahim bin Mansour Bashashah Al-Asiri. Which has become a major attraction, providing authentic southern tastes to visitors visiting the ancient southwest Saudi city.

Diners come from all around the Kingdom and the Gulf nations to get a taste of southern hospitality.

The restaurant was originally a coffeeshop operate by Al-Asiri.  Also who is a plastic artist and gift and flower designer, according to Arab News.

“The structure used to be the Asir police station. “I was not in favour of major extensions and modifications that would obliterate the building’s distinctive designs,” he explained.

According to the artist. “The visitor should be able to perceive the history of a location that is 40 or 50 years old,”.

Al-Asiri, a jack of all crafts, decided to put his skills to use and assist preserve the city’s history. However by converting the coffeeshop into a restaurant.

The restaurant began by serving simply breakfast, but the menu rapidly grew to include meals throughout the day.

Al-Qatt Al-Asiri, a typically feminine interior wall decoration and old art form regarded a vital part in Asir’s history. Which is one type of art present at the restaurant.

Al-Hosn Al-menu Turathi’s highlights include al-arika. A classic southern dessert made with brown flour, warm water, oil, and ghee to make a dough. Also sweetened with a drizzle of honey and cardamom.


According to Al-Asiri, the restaurant is the first in the Kingdom to sell “miva,” or southern “tannour” bread. Who is also the first Saudi to cook in a traditional Saudi garb.

The local producing families are in support by the Al-Hosn Al-Turathi historic restaurant. One of the sisters, Umm Joud, who has a master’s degree in business management. Also oversees the creation of hot drinks utilizing traditional ingredients.

Al-Asiri urged Saudi youth to work hard, stating the kingdom provides numerous chances to achieve the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goals. “We must be patient and active, and we must strive to achieve the pinnacle of our skills. As a result, we must persevere and work diligently,” he stated.
