Obesity in Saudi Arabia costs $19 billion

According to a new research, obesity costs Saudi Arabia $19 billion each year. Also this amount might increase by 2060 if the problem is not address.

Obesity costs the United Kingdom the equivalent of 2.4 percent of its gross domestic product. According to a study published by BMJ (British Medical Journal) Global Health. The study surveyed eight countries. In addition they found that obesity costs the Kingdom the equivalent of 2.4 percent of its gross domestic product.

The World Obesity Federation and RTI International study concluded that Saudi Arabia. Which has a 35 percent obesity rate, had the biggest effect as a percentage of GDP among the nations evaluated.

It also caution that unless “immediate action” are not took place. Moreover, “the economic effect in Saudi Arabia is predict to climb to 4.1 percent by 2060, equal to US$78 billion.”

These costs are generate from calculations based on direct costs. Such as healthcare, as well as indirect costs, such as early death and job absence. Indirect costs were to account for 65 percent of overall effects.

Obesity levels are influence by “social, biological, and environmental causes,” according to the study. Therefore, individuals are not necessarily to blame for their condition.

She went on to say that most Gulf states, all of which have significant obesity rates, face the same problems.

Ralston praised Saudi programs such as the Saudi Sports for All Federation’s promotions. Which “push citizens to embrace healthy practices”.

But also to address the variables that contribute to obesity that are beyond the individual’s control,” she added. “Effective obesity prevention, treatment, and management will not be achieve by simply begging individuals to modify their behaviors,” she noted.


“We must investigate how we can enable individuals to live healthy lives on a governmental and cultural level,” she says. Governments must enact comprehensive policies as soon as possible. In addition to increase residents access to low-cost, nutritious meals and inexpensive healthcare. As well as to allow them to live balanced lives free of stress and unfavorable events”.

In February, the UK’s Prince William will visit the UAE



Prince William will visit Dubai to mark the UAE’s 50th anniversary

During the Duke of Cambridge’s first official trip to the UAE, on February 10. Prince William will visit Dubai to mark the UAE’s 50th anniversary during the UK booth’s celebrations at Expo 2020 Dubai. The pavilion will take up most of Expo 2020 Dubai, and it will showcase talent from across the UK.

The Queen’s Baton Relay for Birmingham 2022, announced by Queen Elizabeth II in October, will take place at Expo and visit pavilions of Commonwealth nations.

Prince William will also visit the UAE as part of his visit to the UAE that strengthens the relationship between the UK and UAE.

On his visit to the UAE, Prince William will meet Emirati youth and government leaders. There will also be a discussion of two Royal Foundation programmes: United for Wildlife and The Earthshot Prize.
