On Saturday, Lebanon MP hid in their houses for fear of being assassinate by Hezbollah militants. As Lebanon’s fresh crisis threatened to spin out of hand.
Security agencies warned Lebanese Forces MPs not to go out amid rising tensions over a judicial probe. Which is into the Beirut port explosion in August 2020. Which killed over 200 people and destroyed large sections of the city.
“Yes, the Lebanon MP forces were this instruction,” said party communications chief Charles Jabbour to Arab News. “They are afraid of being under target for assassination and murder, as Hezbollah has done in the past”. Hezbollah must surrender its weapons to the government as part of the settlement.”
The dilemma involves Judge Tarek Bitar’s inquiry. Which seeks to interrogate past and current ministers related to Hezbollah. Also the affiliated Amal Party over their role in the fatal port bombing. The ministries have refused to comply, claiming that the judge’s actions are political.
Tensions reached breaking point for Lebanon MP
Tensions reached a breaking point last Thursday. When gunfire erupted during a Hezbollah. Also when Amal demonstration against the inquiry in a mostly Christian neighborhood of downtown Beirut, killing seven people.
On Saturday, Justice Minister Henry El-Khoury expressed his support for Judge Bitar. Who had the authority to call whomever he chose in the case. El-Khoury stated, “I stand with the… investigator”. He said he lacked the power to replace Bitar and that he was under no pressure to do so.
On Saturday, the minister met with Prime Minister Najib Mikati. Also President of the Supreme Judicial Council Suhail Abboud. In addition with the Public Prosecutor Ghassan Oueidat to address the inquiry. They’ve agreed to invite Bitar to a council meeting on Tuesday.

Bitar’s inquiry also received backing from an unexpected source. Former Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil, the leader of Lebanon’s largest Christian group, the Free Patriotic Movement. Also Bassil stated, “The Free Patriotic Movement is for continuing the investigation, the truth, and putting those guilty on trial.”
Bassil, who is President Michel Aoun’s son-in-law. Also widely suspected of plotting to succeed him. However is sanction by the US for alleged corruption and links to Hezbollah.
