Elusive bird spotted in Fujairah

Nightjars are nocturnal birds that breed throughout Europe and migrate to Africa during the winter. The bird recently visited an Emirati farm in Fujairah.

It typically measures about 26cm in length with a 55cm wingspan. It has grey plumage streaked with black.

The man caught the feathered guest and handed it over to environmental authorities.

“Its not easily caught, particularly because the bird sleeps during the day and is active during night,” said Abdul Nassir Obeidat, principal environment researcher at Fujairah Environment Authority.

Experts traveled to the farm the same day. It took the bird for examination before freeing it.

“We measured the size, weight, and length of its wings, tail, and feathers,” said Mr. Obeidat.

A tracking bracelet bearing the authority’s name was placed on the bird’s foot. Before it was allowed to spread its wings.

“We are part of international efforts to collect. Share data that would help protect the environment and all species.”

He said Fujairah has welcomed numerous rare creatures because it is on the migration route of many birds.

The emirate’s environment authority has documented 375 birds from 67 different species.

BirdLife International, an international alliance of conservation organizations. Recognized some of the rare birds as nesting in Wadi Wurayah National Park located in the emirate.

This year the authority will document two new bird species for the region

The authority will document two new bird species in the region this year: the Arabian spotted eagle owl and the Omani owl.

Earlier this month, The National reported on a rare UAE sighting of Radde’s accentor – a small bird that favours alpine habits.

Normally it only visits parts of Turkey, Syria, and Iran and as far east as Turkmenistan, but not the UAE.

MoFAIC Statement:

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said that the UAE would respond to this attack. It is “a heinous crime by the terrorist Houthi militia in breach of international and humanitarian laws”.

The Ministry said that this terrorist militia is persisting its unlawful activities. No one can do such inducing terror in the region to achieve its criminal aims and purposes. It has called on the international community to criticize and condemn these terrorist acts, targeting civilians and civil facilities.

The UAE also voiced its strong denunciation and condemnation of the terrorist Houthi militia’s invasion of Jazan in Saudi Arabia. Attack  done with a ballistic missile, which left two civilians injured.

The Ministry thought this a risky escalation and cowardly act that endangered civilians’ security and called for taking all required measures to defend civilians from Houthi threats.

“The security of the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is inseparable. The Ministry noted that any threat confronting the Kingdom is a threat to the UAE’s security and stability,” the Ministry noted.

Private schools in Sharjah:

Some private schools in Sharjah have chosen to opt for distant learning for primal students on Monday and Tuesday (January 24 and 25).

Students above 12 can attend in-person lessons from Monday, 24 Jan 2022; however, a mandatory negative PCR test result.

Authorities have given private schools in Sharjah the chance to conduct in-person, mixed, and distant learning classes.

The move is part of schools’ steps to follow up all the safety measures backed by the Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA) amid a substantial rise of Covid-19 cases in the UAE.
