A star-rating system launched by Dubai on Thursday (November 18) will annually honor restaurants around the globe that apply sustainable practices to produce safe, healthy and high-quality food. This is the first of its kind rating system to evaluate eateries through four main themes. Sheikh Mansoor unveils this initiative at Dubai International Food Safety Conference at Expo.
Chairman of Dubai Sports Council, Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, launched the new initiative at the opening ceremony of the 15th Dubai International Food Safety Conference at Expo 2020 Dubai.
Dubai Star is the first global rating system based on food safety standards. This rating will be based on how well the restaurants comply with the requirements of food safety and sustainability.
It will be provided after a comprehensive assessment by a multidisciplinary and professional team.
During the opening ceremony, Dawood Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality said the new rating system will encourage restaurants “to adopt sustainable approaches and excel in food safety and comply with international standards.”
Khalid Mohammed Sharief Al Awadhi, CEO of Health, Safety and Environment Sector at Dubai Municipality further said Dubai Star is not a mandatory rating system. Al Awadhi also said “But restaurants are welcome to get the rating to show their international level acceptance,” He further said “We will start with UAE restaurants this year and will expand it to international restaurants from next year,”
He further added that the Dubai Star stamp of approval is expected to increase competition among restaurants for the betterment of their food safety standards.

The 15th edition of the annual conference held on Tuesday has brought together locals, regional, and international experts in food safety and discusses various topics under the theme “Creative solutions for sustainable food systems.”
