Doctors: some variants are at more risk of reoccurring

According to the UAE doctors, some variants are at more risk of reoccurring. They also explained why the chances of reinfection are higher in the case of some variants.

Some variants of Covid-19 are at more risk of reoccurring

Medics have tried to make people aware of the threats of the Omicron variant of coronavirus. Also, they have made specific reports about how the variant will affect vaccinated individuals.

Doctors in the Arab country claim that the Omicron virus has a high chance of reinfection. By this, they mean that person who has already had Covid-19 in the past is more prone to the infection. However, the symptoms of the new variant are much milder in partially or fully vaccinated people.

So, the Omicron virus is not fatal for those vaccinated with coronavirus vaccines.

Reinfection: need to worry

A pulmonologist specialist at Medeor Hospital, Dr Saheer Sainalabdeen, said that no matter what reinfection gives a sense of worry to them. Reinfection is nothing but a person is infected by coronavirus twice. Also, a survey conducted in the United Kingdom has shown that Omicron is even five times more contagious than the Delta variant.

So, according to Dr Saheer Sainalabdeen, the highly infectious nature of the Omicron virus is the reason for reinfection. No doubt, the vaccine has played a significant role in boosting up the immunity of people against the virus. However, vaccines are not 100 per cent effective in resisting the virus. Also, immunity gained from vaccines is effective over a certain period.

How mutations made the virus more infective

Another internal medicine specialist, Dr Shyam Raja Mohan, from Prime Hospital, tried to explain why Omicron is at more risk of reinfection. He also gave certain statements about the Omicron virus escaping from immunity built from vaccines.

According to him, the Omicron variant of Covid-19 has almost 50 mutations. These 50 mutations are compared to the studied initially Covid-19 virus, which was isolated in Wuhan of China in 2019. He also added that spike protein is one of the essential parts of the Covid virus. In Omicron, there are 36 mutations in the spike protein. While, there were 10, 12 and 9 mutations in the spike of protein of alpha, gamma and delta variant respectively.

These mutations in the Omicron virus increases its ability to link with ACE2. Thus, the virus becomes more infective for the cells. Its reproduction rate and transmissibility also increase.

Above listed were some explanations of UAE doctors on some variants are at more risk of reoccurring.
