Daesh Sahel militant leader killed by French forces

The leader of Islamic State in the Greater Sahara Daesh Sahel. Who was under hunt for killing US soldiers and international humanitarian workers. In addition was neutralize by French troops in an operation.

President Emmanuel Macron tweeted early Thursday that Adnan Abu Walid Al-Sahrawi had been “neutralize” by French soldiers.

Macron added, without specifying the location or details of the operation. He said “this is another important achievement in our battle against terrorist organizations in the Daesh Sahel.”

Sahrawi killed as a result of an attack by France’s Barkhane force. Also which fights extremists in the Sahel, according to Defense Minister Florence Parly.

She tweeted, “This is a decisive blow against this terrorist gang.” “Our struggle goes on.”

The terrorist leader was under hunt by the US for a fatal 2017 attack on US forces in Niger. As well as the murder of French humanitarian workers in 2020.

Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) was construct by Sahrawi in 2015. Also is responsible for the majority of militant assaults in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso.

ISGS and the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims regularly target the volatile “tri-border” area (GSIM).

ISGS has launched out devastating strikes in the region, killing civilians and troops.

The US had issued a $5 million reward for information on Sahrawi’s whereabouts. However since he was in connection with an incident in Niger on October 4, 2017. Which killed four US Special Forces and four Niger forces.

Sahrawi, a former member of the Polisario Front independence movement in Western Sahara. Which joined Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and co-led Mujao, a Malian Islamist organization. Who kidnapped Spanish charity workers in Algeria and a number of Algerian diplomats in Mali in 2012.

After Sahrawi’s death, Macron tweeted. “The country is thinking this evening of all its heroes who died for France in the Sahel in the Serval. Also Barkhane missions, of the grieving families, of all its injured.”

In 2012, militants took control of the north of Mali. However were force out of the towns by France’s military involvement in 2013.

Mali, a poor and landlocked country with at least 20 ethnic groups, is still fighting terrorist assaults and intercommunal violence. Which frequently spills over into neighboring nations.
